Model of communicative
competence presented by
Celce-Murcia et al (1955:10) as follows:
Ø Discourse competence is major competencies
pursued by language education.
Ø Discourse
competence is ability to use language in communication. Discourse
competence can only be gained if students acquire competencies supporting such as Sociocultural
competence, Linguitic competence and actional competence.
Ø Sociocultural competence is competence to understand the sociocultural
in an area.
Example: If we go
to one area and we don’t know their
social and cultural, it can makes misunderstanding. When meeting, usually
Indonesian people said, “where are you going?” and people answered it. That’s
Indonesian habit. But in western, the answer of that question is, “It’s not your business!”.
Ø Linguistic competence is ability to use grammar, vocabulary,
pronunciation and spelling.
Example: I
speak to my friend. I have to talk using good
grammar, good pronunciation and also the word
that my friend
would understand.
Ø Actional competence that is how the act
says, either spoken
or written language.
Example:
Manner of speaking. How I talk to older people than me, different from talking to someone younger or the same age. As well as with people who are familiar with me and the people I've just met.
Ø Strategic competence
Strategic competence outside the triangle because it just support the major
strategic of the diagram. It’s just method that is used to
achieve the learning objectives.
Example: I
want to say the word, but i forget it, so I can change in a different word that
has same meaning with it. For example, I want to say I need a pen, I can say I need something to write.
The strategic competence may come from:
1.
Ourselves
2.
Others who have better competence such as teacher, friend, etc.
3.
Media such as
book, internet, newspaper, etc.
4.
